Did you ever imagine how the first land plants looked like?... and by first I mean around 400 millions of years ago...
The evolution from algaes to land plants must have been a lengthy process. A number of favorable mutations and the natural selection, lead to the conquest of the earth. One of the major problems of these primitive flora was the support, due to the fact that they did not have the help of the water to maintain themselves, they evolved thickenings in the walls of the cells. Other adaptations were, for example, a mechanism to avoid desiccation. This was solved by developing a cuticle, a thin waxy layer that lays on the surface of mostly all land plants, but as plants need to breathe, they have generated the stomata: these "controlled" holes that were interrupting the cuticle, and that still exist in the actual plants but with more sophisticated forms.
They used to be very small and smooth axes, branching dichotomously generally. These plants did not bear any kind of leaves, but had these reproductive structures that could be terminal or axial, with different shapes: reniform, discoidal, spherical, etc.
They reproduced by developing spores in these sporangia, when mature they were released to the ground where they develop a new specimen.
These spores were well protected against desiccation and the attack of fungi with a complex organic wall (The molecule exist since almost the beginning of life, 3000 millions of years ago), which allowed to find, nowadays, in the matrix of rocks the "peels" of the spores that resemble exactly as when they were alive.
This is one of the subjects that I am dealing within my Ph D theses. My director collected some years ago some rocks containing fragmentary pieces of these primitive plants, and now we are rendering the last details of the paper we have written about them.

Alguna vez se imaginaron cómo eran las primeras plantas terrestres?... y como primitivas me refiero hace 400 millones de años atras...
La evolución de algas a plantas terrestres debió haber sido un proceso largo. Un número de mutaciones favorables y selección natural, llevó a estas a la conquista de la tierra. Uno de los problemas más grandes de estas floras primitivas fue el soporte, debido al hecho de que no tenían el medio acuoso para mantenerse por si mismas, desarrollaron engrosamientos en las paredes celulares. Otras adaptaciones fueron, por ejemplo, un mecanismo para evitar la desecación. Esto fue resuelto desarrollando una cutícula, una fina capa que está en la superficie de casi todas las plantas terrestre, aunque como las plantas también necesitan respirar, desarrollaron los estomas: estos "agujeros" controlados que interrumpian la cutícula, y que aún existen en las plantas actuales aunque en formas más sofisticadas.
Solína ser muy pequeñas, con ejes lisos, que generalmente se ramificaban dicotómicamente. Estas plantas no portaban ningún tipo de hojas, pero tenían estruturas reproductivas que podíán ser terminales o axiales, y con formas diferentes: reniformes, discoidales, esféricas, etc.
Se reproducían desarrollando esporas en estos esporangios, que cuando maduras, eran liberadas al suelo donde desarrollaban un nuevo especímen.
Estas esporas estaban muy bien protegidas contra la desecación y el ataque de hongos, con una pared orgánica compleja (la molécula existe desde casi el comienzo de la vida, hace 3000 millones de años atrás), la cual permitió que hoy en día podamos encontrar en la roca las "cascaritas" de las esporas que se asemejan exactamente a como eran en vida.
Este es uno de los temas de los cuales trato en mi tesis de doctorado. Mi directora colectó hace algunos años, rocas con piezas fragmentarias de estas plantas primitivas, y ahora estamos ultimando los detalles de un trabajo que escribimos sobre ellas.
